North Fork Dream

Last week I found out that one of my tapestries – North Fork Dream – was selected for an online exhibit with an Aquarium theme.

It’s funny because I almost didn’t apply for the show. I was in the process of applying when my session timed out and I had already experienced some glitches in the application process. I gave up when the session timed out. I was done for the day and it was the last day to apply.

But I guess the universe really wanted me to try again. A couple days later I got an email about the show and the deadline was still a few days out. They must have either changed the date, or I had it wrong to begin with.

Woven on the North Fork of Long Island

I started this tapestry after finishing Moon Views, which is a circle weaving. I remember that when I started this piece, I had no idea in mind what I was creating. I was just weaving intuitively. I was about halfway done before I realized I was weaving a beach with water. I was weaving the bay side of the North Fork looking out on Shelter Island. It had gently lapped its way into my subconscious.

A misty day at Orient State Park looking out at Shelter Island.

When I got close to finishing, I had to add some shells and one of the many honey locust seed pods I picked up from Stony Brook University.

As with many of my tapestries, this one was woven with a variety of fibers including some very unnatural plastic mesh produce bags – the kind that carry onions or garlic. One of them is making some fine ocean spray in this work.

Tomorrow will be three years to the day that my son and I began our travels across country to Long Island. We weren’t even there a year. It all feels like a dream now.
