I finally have a handful of eyes made – enough to add three to the store today:

All of these are hand-stitched and use devil’s claw seed pods as well as reused mesh produce bags. They are also all priced under $50.
I’ve been trying to come up with items I can offer that are unique, but take less time to make. I’ve also been working towards incorporating more of my environment into my art. These fun eyes cover all bases.
While I have never had much luck with growing devil’s claw from seed, it does grow wild in the Sonoran Desert. And many years ago, I was a lucky recipient of a large bundle of seed pods from a friend. So I have many of these seed pods to work with. In addition to eyes, I have some other ideas of how to use these in my fiber art.
They are a traditional fiber used in Tohono O’odham basketry. And the plant is beautiful when it’s in bloom.
Apparently, whoever wrote this article isn’t a fan of the plant. Likely they don’t live in the Sonoran Desert.
