A dragon branch weaving by Sarah Batchelder

As a Dragon Loving Book Pusher…

As a follow up to my previous post, I want to share a very short list of my all time favorite dragon books – one per age group.

Favorite Picture Book –

Best dragon picture book ever!

East Dragon, West Dragon by Robyn Eversole is absolutely my favorite dragon picture book.

The pictures by Scott Campbell are wonderful, with lots of details of things happening in the background. When West Dragon needs a break from the pesky knights that plague him, he takes it. Those knights (and king) then go off and encounter different dragons far away.

One of the things I love about this book is how it very naturally exposes kids to different ways of thinking about one mythological beast.

Some dragons are known to be quite helpful.

Favorite Chapter Book –

The dragon in this book can’t fly.

Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin is my favorite dragon chapter book. The dragon needs a friend as much as the main character and they make a good team. The imagery in this book is magnificent.

Favorite Young Adult Book –

It’s not Eragon. It’s Burn by Patrick Ness. I made a comment on this book when I worked for Pima County Public Library a few years ago.

I absolutely love Patrick Ness. I can’t not love him when he writes such great books with very real seeming characters living tough lives. Even his absurd stories feel real. I hope I don’t ever learn anything about him that lets me down the way Neil Gaiman did. (I don’t want to love Neil Gaiman’s stories anymore.)

Favorite Adult Book –

Definitely it’s When Women Were Dragons by Kelly Barnhill. This book moved me to my core. It’s a fantastically themed story that was written in response to very real American events in recent herstory. I wrote a bit about it a few years ago (again on Pima County Public Library’s website in a Three Books on a Theme post.)
