Proofing & Repairing

For a while I’ve contemplated proofreading as a profession. I started a course a couple of years ago and made headway before moving across the country and back. I’m probably ridiculously close to finishing…

I’m not sure what’s stopping me.

Maybe it’s because I get super embarrassed about mistakes I’ve made – especially super-glaringly obvious ones, that I just didn’t see (before posting to the whole world). And I don’t feel like I have anyone in my life right now that I can ask to proofread my work.

It’s like petsitting. In the past, there was always just someone in my life that could pet sit. Friend, neighbor, work associate. Now – there’s no one. I am surrounded by people that I have nothing to do with. I’m hoping to get a job where I get to go to a work site, because working from home is very hard for me. There are distractions everywhere. (Another reason why it’s hard to think about finishing that thing).

Actually, hybrid would be ideal. I could work from home when in the flow, and show up at the office for all the other times – where I force myself through all the tasks that need doing.

So I fixed the sewing mistake in my banner. My brain finally relaxed enough that I could see that the “l” had disappeared. I know I originally made one. It must have flown off during the machine sewing. Lots of those pins got loose.

I actually like the banner better with it’s clunky correction. I haven’t actually taken it to a rally yet. My next steps are backing and mounting. I can’t decide if I want it hanging down or sideways like a flag. Or maybe, it should become a part of something larger – like a lightweight robe / jacket.

I got my sewing machine during the pandemic and I’m still figuring out how to use it. I broke another needle recently. I think I’m up to three now. I originally learned from my mom at some point way back when. Basic stuff – like making a sleeping sack. There were some times when she made clothes for me. (And I liked them! – long skirts, basic stuff.)

All the sewing I did pre-pandemic was by hand. Sewing is time consuming work – even with a machine.

I’ve been fixing a lot of things lately – many of them related to the new puppy of the house.

I know that she will not be a constant chewer, but that is her phase right now.

I made her a big bed from an old blanket and pieces of other dog beds, toys, and scrap fabric. She’s already bitten a hole through it.

I intentionally bought two pairs of flip-flops from the dollar store, knowing that I might lose a pair right away. And I did, but at least she chewed the one that give me a mismatched pair for both feet.

She has not yet chewed up a weaving project, but she did get the corner on a nice (handwoven) rug I have from Peru. It makes me sigh until I remember that ink stains on my dad’s old wooden desk, which used to be his grandmother’s. Someone sploshed a well of ink and probably felt bad about it. I look at the stain and wonder if it came from poetry or just a loose arm.

Anyway, I love that old desk with it’s ink stain. I’ll figure out a way to mend my rug. But for now, I’ll just keep it out of puppy reach.
