Slowly learning in circles

I finally finished the first circular weaving I started and am pretty happy with how it turned out.

Raven Gets the Worm

I’m pretty sure I began this piece sometime in the autumn of 2022.

I made no attempt to read or learn about circular weaving from anyone or anywhere before I started – other than looking at pictures. I began in the center using repurposed fibers, working my way out. I got the yellow added and realized I was working on a chicken or a rooster. (I didn’t have a set idea in mind when I began.)

While I love chickens, some of my favorite birds are ravens, so I added the bulk of the raven next and the purple produce bag worm.

And then I got stuck, so I set it aside for a while.

It went into storage and I moved onto to other projects. I realize now that this is not an unusual process for my tribe of neurodivergent thinkers and doers.

When I was living on Long Island, I finished two circular weavings after reading about the process first:

So when I found my unfinished project recently, I knew what I had to do to finish the piece. I added more warp strings, so I could fill in the sky and foliage.

And close to two years after I started this piece, it’s done!

Lately, I feel the need to keep reminding myself that slow growth is growth. And I am learning, growing, and creating.
