Roundabouts vs Crossroads

It’s been a while since I’ve posted here. There’s a reason for that.

Life has been complicated and time consuming. And I haven’t had the mental capacity to write here for a bit. I’ve been busy with my librarian life. I decided I needed to start working full time again and I found a very cool library much closer to where I am now to work as a children’s services librarian. I’ll get to play with puppets again! Working as an instructional librarian at a big university was interesting, and I’m glad I tried it. But my strengths lie elsewhere and the drive to Stony Brook was long and not fun.

I was going to downgrade my website and get rid of my shop (and I still may do so), but since my new plan is to take things one day at a time, I don’t think I’ll do it today.

I was explaining to a friend a couple of weeks ago that where many people come to a crossroads in their life, I feel like I’m in a roundabout. So many possible paths and it’s hard for me to chose.

I know why I came back east – to be closer to family and scout out possible future living spaces. And the reality has been that this transition has been rough. It’s not just that my mom has gotten a lot worse, my brother has as well. I also miss Arizona a lot more than I thought I would. NY State seems to like to make things extra complicated with everything. (It took me three times going to the DMV before I could finally get a driver’s license. It’s not just the sun in winter that I miss.)

So I’ve been doing a lot of reflection lately. And my strategy is to take things just one day at a time for now.

I read an interesting article about people with ADHD that helped me see myself from the outside. (I miss my therapist as well). I may have impulsively jumped into starting an art based business. Right now I don’t have time to maintain the store – which is why I’ll likely downgrade.

However, I do know that I definitely want to start looking into print on demand. I just seem to have a knack for trying things, getting an error that I don’t understand, and then it’s really hard to get back and try again.

Since my last post I did finish my first circle weaving “Moon Phases”.

A circle weaving of a multi-hued blue crescent moon nested in a white, slimmer crescent moon, by fiber artist Sarah Batchelder. The blue moon has a loose braided drop hanging from it. There are star buttons over the moons and three pom poms off to one side.

I’ve also come up with a joyful solution to having so many unsold decorative items, but I’ll save that for another post.

Taking things one day at a time seems like a good strategy right now, Sarah. And the nice thing about roundabouts is that you don’t have to make a decision the way you do at a crossroads — you can just keep going around until you feel like make a choice!
