From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler

by E.L. Konigsburg

I finished reading this book with my son about a month ago and was pleased with how well it has held up.

I remember being read this story as a child. I think it must have been fifth grade in Mr. Laskowich’s class. He used to read to us every day-I think it was right before lunchtime.

This book won the 1968 Newbery award. It features a sister and brother who run away from Connecticut to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. They live there for over a week and investigate the mystery of who made the Angel statue.

While a lot has changed in the forty-six years since this book was written, it is still a fun read. My son and I visited the museum last fall, so he was familiar with the museum. While the floor plans may have changed some over the years, it remains a giant museum with lots of nooks and crannies. The beds are still roped off (and likely dusty). And while the fountain may have changed shape and place, there is still a watery area that could be used for bathing in a pinch.
